The model shows the dam as it will look in 2009. It is located in Xiling Gorge, the longest of the three gorges of the Yangtze River. The dam will be 2,335 meters long, 185 meters high, and 130 meters wide at the base and will create a reservoir 600 kilometers long. There will be 5 locks that ships must pass through (see the right side of the model). The river level will rise to 175 meters above sea level, flooding 570,000 acres of farmland and causing 1.5 million people to move. The completed project will prevent the ongoing problem of flooding in the agricultural areas in the lower reaches of the river, will provide better navigation for boats as the river deepens, and will generate power.
